Five Major Rivers of Bangladesh


Padma River
The river padma in bengali podda is a major river of Bangladesh. The water stream of Ganges is commonly known as padma in Bangladesh at the entrance point Monakosha and Durlavpur union at Shibganj thana, Nawabganj district. It encompasses the Nawbganj, Rajshahi, Pabna, Kushtia, Faridpr, Rajbari and Chadpur district of Bangladesh. It is 120 km long and 4 to 8 km wide across Bangladesh.The very important Goalandaghat-Chandpur steamer route is mostly on this river. The Padma enters Bangladesh from India near Chapai Nababganj. It meets the Jamuna near Aricha and retains its name, but finally meets with the Meghna near Chandpur and adopts the name 'Meghna' before flowing into the Bay of Bengal.

Jamuna River
Jamuna second largest river in Bangladesh which is a big one across the world. It is one of the main river of Bangladesh whose distributery channel of the river Brahmaputra as it flows from China and India. It is mainly the downstream of Brahmaputra river flows south and joins the Padma river near Goalundo Ghat before meeting with the Meghna river near Chandpur district. Jamun originates from Earthquake and catastrophic flood in 1787. Jamuna's basin covering areas in Tibet, China, India and Bangladesh. Finally it flows into Bay of Bengal as Meghna river. In Bangladesh the river named as Jamuna as long as 205 km and it's width varies from 3 to 18 km.



Meghna River
Meghna is another major river system of Bangladesh. specially famous for its great estuary that discharges the flows of the Ganges-Padma, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Meghna itself. The down stream of Surma river is often reffered to as Meghna and it is one of the three that forms the Ganges Delta. It is formed in Bangladesh by the joining of different rivers originating from the himaloyas of India. Actually the Padma river meets the meghna at estuary in Chandpur district, then it is flowed into Bay of Bengal as Meghan river. The Meghna river combines with the water of Padma and Jamuna ( formerly named as Brahmaputra in BD). After a long across about 264 km it enters the Bay of Bengal by for principal mouths - Tetulia, Shahbazpur, Hatia, and Bamni.
